A healthy diet must be varied, both in foods and in nutrients to make us feel well and have the energy to face the day. Sometimes, running against the clock in our daily lives, we eat something quick or precooked just for convenience. However, a varied diet can be quick and (let’s face it) delicious as well.

October 16 is World Food Day, a time for reflection on how our ways of eating affect our health and the planet. It’s also a time to think about how easy it could be to eat healthily when we have so many different foods at our fingertips.

And to make it easier for you too, here are a few tips to make eating well a daily habit.

1- Plan your meals: make a list of meals for the week. That will make it easier to see whether you are getting all the nutrients you need. You could also try Batch Cooking, an economic time-saving way to prepare your meals.

2- Have fruit and vegetables for your snacks. A healthy diet should include 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables a day. So, use your morning and afternoon breaks to assuage your hunger with a piece of fruit or your favourite vegetable.

3- Add whole grains. Grains are important in all forms, but whole grains are higher in fibre and richer in vitamins and minerals. To add them to your diet you can always take some wholemeal Velarte, like Cereals Plus or Fibre Plus, with you.

4- Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is key. For those who struggle to mange to drink 2 litres per day, water in herbal teas, broths and even fruit also counts.

It’s important to be aware of what you’re eating and not to deprive yourself of anything, always in a balanced way. Then there’s also comfort food, with all its calories, fats and sugars, but so good to eat. Well, you can still have some comfort food, as long as you do it less often and make sure your other meals give you all the nutrition you need.

It’s also very important to incorporate physical activity into your day. Whether it’s running, playing a sport or even yoga or Pilates. Movement is important to maintain the health of the body. Exercise releases endorphins, relieving stress and anxiety. It also improves the circulation and strengthens bones and muscles.

To make your new diet easy and tasty, Velarte has gone for health in its new Natur range with its 34% spelt and dill crunchy Breadsticks and its buckwheat and poppy Breadsticks.  Not only are they low in salt, but they are also free from colourings, preservatives and added sugars. They are perfect with vegetables mid-morning or even as a side dish.

So, eating well is a delicious way to take care of our health and with exercise, it makes for a very beneficial lifestyle.
